Traffic jam relief
May 8th, 2008
When I’m stuck in traffic after work I have only two things on my mind:
- an empty rear windscreen of the car in front of me (hey, they sometimes put ads there!) and
- how big is the traffic jam, i.e. when will I get home?
If read windscreen is all I can see, why not to use it to tell me when I’ll be moving again? Here is an idea.
Imagine if there was a transparent film-thin display attached to the rear windscreen of a car. This display could be used to deliver any information to the person in the car behind.

This information could be a distance to the end of the traffic jam transmitted to the display by the traffic control service:

Compared to the overhead displays they use on motorways the information on motorways would be available on almost any road with traffic.
If I know that I have only 2 miles left to go at 5 mph, it makes me feel less stressed and more comfortable. Because I know.
